the wine in jordan
Jordan was one of those few to claim their hand in giving wine to the world. Nevertheless, it was not to be seen anywhere on the world wine map. The wineries used local grapes to make not-so-appreciable wines. Lack of viticultural and vinification knowledge and inappropriate viticultural areas held-back the country from displaying its true caliber. It was only after Bulos Zumot took a shot at setting-up a vineyard to cultivate grapes for winemaking.
Bulos Zumot, father of the present owner Omar Zumot, started the company, Zumot Fine Wines, in 1954 as a vintner. The idea of vinyeards and grape growing was virgin to Jordan before Sir Zumot planted the first vine in Madaba. They knew it would be a challenge but never thought it was

Umm el-Jimal.
The Umm el-Jimal Project is an archaeological research, cultural heritage
preservation, and community development partnership centered on the site and
people of Umm el-Jimal, Jordan. Over a century ago the scholar Howard Butler
recorded in vivid detail haunting first impressions experienced over the
centuries by travelers to this ancient site, writing:
Far out in the desert, in the
midst of a rolling plain, beside the dry bed of an ancient stream, there is a
deserted city.... The walls of the ancient deserted city, its half-ruined gates,
the towers and arches of its churches, the two and three-story walls of its
mansions,
shobak castle.
Part of the great beacon chain of Crusader
fortresses, Shobak Castle is by far the most lonely. Built in 1115 AD by Baldwin I, who later built Karak , it was originally known as Mont Realis (Montreal) and was the first outpost of the kingdom of Jerusalem in the Crusader district of Outrejordain. Situated on an isolated knoll overlooking the trade routes that ran through the wadi below, Shobak is breathtaking.

The original
entrance to Shobak Castle was through a dog-legged triple gate. Above this is
the Crusader Church, with strategic views of the old village. There are several
wells found within the castle walls, although the main water source was the
spring at the foot of the hill.
